Nyumbani

Nyumbani is a children's home in Kenya that cares for almost 100 HIV positive orphans. The children in the home are from newborn to 20 years old. The home is also a center for medical outreach in the community and also houses three levels of school within it's grounds.

Today Nyumbani employs around 70 staff members, up to 20 volunteers and houses almost 100 children.

Children's residences are organized into five cottages with Moms and Uncles providing daily care as well as fostering a family-like environment. Older children live in their own cottages so they may begin to learn the skills of independent living.

Children are able to attend three levels of school in the St. Paul Miki School House; Baby Class (Pre-School); Pre-Unit (Kindergarten); and Class One (First Grade). Older children attend a private school outside Nyumbani.

Medical care is provided by nursing staff in the sick room. Kenyan doctors visit regularly and their work is augmented by visits from doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians who travel from Europe and the United States to volunteer their services.

The Nyumbani on-site laboratory provides the lab work for Nyumbani, Lea Toto, and members of the community who wish to be tested for HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and any other conditions.

Nyumbani has a team of social workers who are helping the children with emotional adjustments as well as trying to reunite them with any living family members.

Visitors from the local community and international volunteers play a vital role in supporting the work of the Nyumbani staff. They enrich the lives of the children, whether it be by bringing a donation of maize, juice, or toys, or informing the children about far away countries, cultures, and customs.
