iThemba Lethu

iThemba Lethu is a voluntary association, established in November 2000, that seeks to impact the lives of children and young people whose futures are threatened by HIV /AIDS. The organization operates in the Durban Metropolitan area in South Africa.

iThemba Lethu has two main programs:

1) Family integration program: They have a small transitional children's home where babies are cared for in a home setting until adoptive or other permanent homes can be found for them. Places babies, who are orphaned or abandoned as a result of HIV, into permanent families in South Africa. (They do not place children for adoption internationally)

2) HIV prevention program: With a long term goal of reducing HIV infection rates amongst young people in Cato Manor which means young people must recognize their self worth and reduce their risk taking behavior. To reach these goals they have an education and support program at local schools.

iThemba Lethu's goal is to open additional family base transitional homes in time. If other organizations or individuals are interested in information on how to start their own small transitional home they are welcome to contact iThemba Lethu for suggestions.
